Voorwoord

The research master programmes that have been offered by the Institute for Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies (HLCS) since 2006/07 provide a wide variety of opportunities and will be described in detail in this prospectus. Courses such as the language, literature or (art) history of a specific country or region have been carefully embedded in these two-year master's programmes.
The Faculty of Arts has opted for three broad research masters that allow sweeping parallels to be drawn without sacrificing depth of content. The individual components enable you to focus on your specific field of interest from the very start while drawing on and further developing the skills you learned in the bachelor phase.
During the two-year programme you will work in small groups with other students and teachers. The programme structure therefore resembles that of a tutorial group; a method used in leading universities across England and the United States. We greatly value the increasing level of independence these programmes afford, with room for creative research and - of no less importance - creative work and reporting methods. Researchers at the HLCS institute are happy to discuss their on-going research and methodological issues with you. You are also welcome to attend the faculty research meetings to get a taste of the latest research studies.
At the end of the two-year programme you will have built up a personal file that includes an English-language article and a research proposal. The master's thesis is a substantial written assignment that could lay the foundations for further research.
If you have been selected for the research master we wish you the best of luck and trust that you will passionately immerse yourself in research and education, embrace new incentives and actively participate in the academic community.

Professor André Lardinois, Director of Research at HLCS
